Perpetual taxi plates in the ACT – Alistair Coe Leader of the Opposition Supports Compensation (2019)
COMMITMENT FROM ACT LIBERAL PARTY TO SUPPORT COMPENSATION CLAIM BY ACTTPOA
Letter from Alisair Leader of the Opposition ACT Legislative Assembly
Dear ACTTPOA and ACT Perpetual Taxi Plate Owners,
Iam concerned about the impact on ACT Perpetual Taxi Plate Owners and their families folowing unjust policy changes by the ACT Labor-Greens Government.
Iunderstand that there have been devastating social and economic consequences resulting from:
- The reduction of ACT taxi plate leases ot $5,000pa.
- The substantial increase of new ACT Government-issued taxi plates released in a short period.
- The inequitable playing field between ride-share operations and taxi operations in the ACT.
I acknowledge the injustice experienced by ACT taxi plate owners who have invested many millions with the ACT Government to operate in a regulated industry. Labor- Greens Government policy has now devalued their investment by 75%, and no offer of compensation has been made.
The Canberra Liberals recognise the valuable contribution of taxi drivers ni the ACT and believe that this unfair treatment of taxi plate owners should be rectified.
To this end, a Canberra Liberals Government wil deliver a compensation package on just terms for ACT Perpetual Taxi Plate Owners. The Canberra Liberals wil also support legislation that achieves this outcome, should an opportunity arise prior to
the election in 2020.
We look forward to working with you to achieve a fair and equitable outcome for taxi plate owners, and to continue ot deliver an efficient and sustainable public transport industry in the ACT.
Mr Alistair Coe
Leader of the Canberra Liberals

Dear Ms Anasta
Thank you for copying me into your email to the Chief Minister.
You are correct that there are a number of problems with the current Labor-Greens Government’s management of the ACT Budget and transport system. Their poor policy decisions have devastated many families. As you may be aware, the Canberra Liberals committed to compensate taxi plate owners on just terms if we are elected to government next year.
Mr Coe (Liberal Leader of the opposition) in 2019 told the group that if he and his Liberal colleagues were in power, compensation would be forthcoming.
While the election is not until October 2020, there may be opportunities before then to take the current Labor-Greens Government to task over their decisions and the impact it has had on people like yourself.
The current Government is out of touch with the Canberra community. I agree that it is time for a change. There are now less than 500 days until the October 2020 election. The Canberra Liberals will be working hard to win the election. Canberra is too good for a bad government.
Thank you again for getting in touch.
