To All ACTTPOA Members – UPDATE 12th June 2018

12th June 2018

To All ACTTPOA Members

It is with great frustration that I write to you to advise that ACTTPOA still cannot give you any worthwhile information on what is happening with your taxi plate in the ACT. I am regularly in contact with the Ministers office to try and gleam some information for you however at this stage nothing is forth coming.

When I last wrote to you we had been given an indication that an announcement may be made around ACT Budget time. Well that time has come and gone and a look through the ACT Budget has shown nothing in respect to taxis.

I am still aware that the Government have indicated that the legislation under which taxis operate in the ACT will need to be changed but cannot gather any information as to in which way or when these changes will be introduced for Assembly approval. I do however believe that a fare increase for this year has being denied however even this information is only rumour at this stage however it may well be correct as from my past experiences with fares metre makers were usually informed by the middle of June for a July start and this has not occurred so far this year.

The administrator of taxis in the ACT is also not able to share any details with us and she has always cooperated with me in the past. Another rumour however is that no more plates are going to be released in June – again only a rumour at this stage but it is something that ACTTPOA has pushed for in the last three months. If this is the case then lease prices should continue to stabilise at the current levels. I do know that Aerial do have people on a waiting list for leases.

Talking with a range of operators in the last month it appears that taxi work has stabilized however it also appears that new ride share operators are still entering the market one recent one offers only women drivers.

So the waiting game goes on. I am drafting a letter to the Ministers office to try and get some response and if I do I will share it with you all.

I trust that the next time I write I can share some more positive news with you all.

Till then

Kind Regards

Tony Briscoe
